Searching Ashland County Criminal Dockets
Start at Wisconsin Circuit Court Access, known as WCCA. It is the free public face of the statewide CCAP system. Ashland County runs no criminal search site of its own. A full case number is your best key. Wisconsin criminal numbers may carry CF for a felony or CM for a misdemeanor, though the live result's format controls.
No number? Search by name instead. Before opening a result, check the caption, county, filing date, case type, and status. A shared name proves nothing. Read the register from the first filing to the newest event.
- Open WCCA through the official Wisconsin case-search gateway and choose Circuit Court Access.
- Enter the full case number, or search a party name and select Ashland County.
- Use Advanced Search to add criminal case type, class, status, attorney, or filing dates if results stay broad.
- Compare the caption, case number, filing date, and criminal class before opening the case-information view.
- Read the latest events, setting, disposition, and document status. Ask the clerk for a needed document or certified copy.
Ashland Criminal Search in WCCA
Start at the WCCA simple-search screen, which takes a party name or a case number. The Advanced Search tab opens up more filters for an Ashland County criminal docket. The list covers county, case type, class code, attorney, filing dates, and status. Add limits one at a time. That habit pays off when a name or year is fuzzy, since you can tell which filter dropped a valid result. The official WCCA search frame on the state site is the single entry point. Every Ashland County docket search runs through it.

Use this screen for Circuit Court case information. It is not a private person-search service.
| Search field | Best use | Check in result |
|---|---|---|
| Case number | Direct lookup from a notice | Year, type, county, sequence |
| Party name | Lookup without a number | Full caption and role |
| County | Limit statewide results | Ashland County |
| Case type or class | Separate criminal matters | Portal's live label |
| Date and status | Narrow similar records | Current range and status |
WCCA goes down for maintenance at times. Older records also vary in online coverage. A blank result, in other words, does not prove that no Ashland County criminal record exists.
Inside an Ashland County Criminal Docket
The public case-information view summarizes the court record rather than reproducing it. Its header may list the Ashland County case number, filing date, criminal class, caption, judge, and status. Party blocks identify the State and the defendant, with attorney information when public. Below that sits the chronological register of recorded events. It does not promise every filed page or protected fact.
| Case header | Case number, filing date, court, caption, judge, type, and status. |
|---|---|
| Charge | Offense description and class, with a statute citation when shown. |
| Events | Complaint, appearance, plea, motions, orders, hearings, trial, sentencing, payments, and appeal entries as recorded. |
| Settings | Hearing type, date, time, judge or room when shown, and reset history. |
| Documents | Public title, date, status, and availability. A restricted image may not open. |
| Disposition | The displayed outcome and date. Read the judgment for full terms. |
Money shows up here too. Financial entries may include costs, fines, restitution, or bond information when public. A WCCA summary is not an official judgment, though, nor a complete criminal-history file. Related or appellate references can appear as well.
Ashland Charges Versus Dispositions
A charge entry is an allegation filed in court. It is not a conviction. Follow the Ashland County register forward through the plea, dismissal, trial result, judgment, and disposition. Multiple charges in one case can end differently, and an open or closed label never replaces the final order.
Read the sequence. Compare each charge with its disposition, then request the judgment of conviction and sentence when the exact ruling matters.
Named in a judgment but can't see it? Use the county request process. The document itself differs from the event line that merely says it was filed.
How a Criminal Case Moves
The Ashland County criminal register grows as Circuit Court records each step, though the exact path depends on the charge and the rulings. A felony may show an initial appearance and preliminary hearing before arraignment. A misdemeanor can follow another sequence. Motions, continuances, and orders fill the gaps between the major stages.
Docket flow: Filing › Initial appearance › Preliminary hearing when required › Arraignment or plea › Pretrial › Plea or trial › Disposition › Sentencing
- Initial appearance
- An early event where the charge and release issues may be addressed.
- Arraignment or plea
- A proceeding where the charge is addressed and a plea may be entered.
- Pretrial
- A case-management hearing about readiness, issues, deadlines, or resolution.
- Continuance or reset
- A move to a later date, not a dismissal or final result.
- Disposition
- The recorded outcome or closing action for a case or charge.
Ashland publishes no official abbreviation list. Use the full event label shown in WCCA rather than guessing at a local code.
Ashland Ordinance Cases Reach Circuit Court
Wisconsin municipal courts handle local ordinance matters where a municipality has created one. Neither Ashland nor Mellen shows a separate municipal court in the official listings. Wisconsin law allows ordinance cases to proceed in circuit court when no municipal court exists. Ashland's own ordinance-citation rule points to the same place. It directs cash deposits to the Ashland County Clerk of Court.
That route does not make every city ticket a Circuit Court criminal docket. A City of Ashland parking ticket can stay in the city's administrative payment channel. So check the issuing paper. If it names the Ashland County clerk, WCCA and the circuit clerk are the right paths. The same holds if it carries a circuit case number. If it points to a city payment system, use that channel instead.
Note: the issuing document identifies the proper channel more reliably than the subject matter or agency name alone.
Courts That Hold Criminal Dockets
Felonies and misdemeanors arise in the Wisconsin Circuit Court, the state's general trial court. Ashland County has one Circuit Court branch. The Ashland County Clerk of Circuit Court keeps the public records. The District Attorney prosecutes but does not certify or copy dockets. Juvenile matters run through the Register in Probate/Juvenile Court Clerk instead. Confidentiality law limits public access there. If a case is appealed, WCCA may identify the appellate case. That next search belongs in WSCCA, covering the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, District III.
Ashland Criminal Record Copy Options
WCCA sometimes shows an event without the paper behind it. Use the county court-record request form for that. Name a party and pick a case type. A case number and year speed things up. The form covers a complaint, judgment of conviction and sentence, disposition, final judgment, or another item you need. For in-person service, go to Room 307 at the Ashland County Courthouse, 201 Main Street West, Ashland, WI 54806, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The phone line is 715-682-7016. Courthouse visitors reach WCCA through the statewide system, though mail, email, and same-day service are not promised.
| Item | Published charge |
|---|---|
| Search when required | $5.00 |
| Plain record | $1.25 per page |
| Certified copy | $1.25 per page plus $5.00 per document |
The county sends a cost and delivery estimate and may ask for prepayment first. WCCA stays free.
Sealed Dockets and Public Access
Access has firm edges. A sealed filing, protected personal information, juvenile details, or another confidential item can drop out of an Ashland County docket while the case itself stays public. The case remains visible; one document may not. A missing image never proves the filing was never made.
Key rules:
Wis. Stat. §§ 19.31-19.39 establish Wisconsin's public-records framework, subject to legal limits.
Wis. Stat. § 801.21 provides the procedure for asking a court to seal a record.
Wis. Stat. § 973.015 governs qualifying criminal expunction and can affect public presentation.
Wis. Stat. ch. 938 governs juvenile access. Ask the clerk or juvenile office about the lawful process, since certification never unlocks protected material.
Ashland Criminal Docket Resets
Continuances muddy the record. An old setting can linger in the Ashland County criminal docket history after a later notice supplies the real date. Start at the first setting and read forward. Trust the newest notice, order, or calendar entry rather than assuming the oldest date still controls. Call the Clerk of Circuit Court at 715-682-7016 when two public entries clash. Staff can confirm what the court record shows, though they cannot give legal advice. A reset only moves the schedule. That reset is not a dismissal, plea, or disposition.
